Cognition of Music, Language and Sounds

Makiko Sadakata is a lecturer at the musicology department of the University of Amsterdam. She is one of the core research members at Music Cognition Group (MCG) at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation.

Research

What is music to our mind and how it differs from other sounds, such as language and environmental sounds? My main research focus is to address this question using various methods (mainly behavioural). I am also involved in different research projects and topics. Keywords: sound learning, rhythm perception, background music.

Teaching

Teaching music cognition is a joy! I learn so much from preparing courses but also from supervising students. I am currently teaching a number of courses related to music cognition and research skills at two Dutch universities.

    Supervision

Working with students is so much fun and stimulating. Every year, I supervise about 5-10 bachlor and master students from my home universities, but also there are always 2-3 students from other national and international study programmes.
